Pregnancy
The osteopathic principal that our body systems depend upon one another to function applies as well during pregnancy. A mother’s body undergoes structural changes to accommodate the growing baby and those changes have a
dramatic effect when it comes how you feel
and how well you are able to go about your
day (and night).

One of the pregnancy hormones causes
laxity within the sacroiliac joints and pubic
area to allow for widening of the pelvic
girdle. In addition the extra weight you
have to carry, the tilting pelvis creates an
increased stretch on the muscles of the
trunk and related joints, leading to increased
low back and pelvic pain.
As the baby descends into the widened pelvis, the increased pressure can cause sciatic pain and tingling or numbness in the legs. Other changes include increases in sodium and water retention resulting in swollen hands, feet and ankles.

Osteopathic treatment will greatly alleviate physiological dysfunctions to reduce pain and discomfort, improve quality of life, reduce complications, shorten the duration of labor, ease delivery and reduce premature or early births.

Treatment at any time during the pregnancy will help. But the earlier it is begun during a pregnancy, the more effective it can be.
